For your consideration today, we have a vintage Choratega 3D 10” display plate. This plate features a 3D sand art carved frog in the center. I’ve looked extensively online, and have not come across another Chorotega piece like this one.
The pottery, which can be in the form of a dish, a pitcher, a pot or an ocarina, comes in three colors tan, ochre red and black. The colors come from the different clays and sands that are used. One of the key ingredients is iguana sand, or sand that is collected from the nests of these creatures which are ubiquitous in this region.
This exceptional piece does have some unfortunate condition issues. There are a few chips on the paint of the plate, as well as some chipping on the sand art and frog. There is a spot where the glaze is damaged, and some wear to the plate back. Please see photos. Each preowned piece tells a unique story so may show minor wear and tear due to its age and previous sentiment to its original owners.
